Britain’s gold divers dominate UK’s Olympic Social TV conversation

Diving certainly seems to be the sport striking gold with UK Tweeters this Olympics! The sport has been responsible for two of the highest peaks of UK Twitter activity in response to #Rio2016 so far, according to data from Kantar Twitter TV Ratings.

Face of British diving Tom Daley and synchronised partner Daniel Goodfellow were in action on Monday in the Men's Synchronised 10m Platform. Despite only having been diving together since October, the pair scored an impressive bronze for the event, which saw UK Tweeters celebrating alongside them with 20,701 Tweets sent in the space of 5 minutes on Monday night!

Daley’s Twitter handle was the second most-mentioned handle in the whole of Monday’s 24-hour Olympic Twitter tracking – present of over 5% of all Tweets, and the divers’ triumphant moment saw the highest single-minute peak for UK Olympic Tweeting on Monday – with 5,138 tweets sent in 60 seconds.

This was swiftly followed by further diving success on Wednesday by British teammates Jack Laugher and Chris Mears, who secured Team GB’s first ever Olympic diving Gold after their performance in the Men's Synchronised 3m Springboard event. Their moment of victory saw 29,773 UK Tweets sent in the space of 5 minutes, with their achievement also seeing the highest individual peak UK Twitter minute for the whole day, with 7,787 Tweets sent in 60 seconds!

Their performance ensured “diving” was the most-mentioned sport by UK Tweeters for the whole of Wednesday’s 24-hour tracking period – with the words “gold” and TeamGB” also featuring high in our tag-cloud of most-mentioned terms. #Diving was also the third most-used hashtag in UK Tweets about the Olympics for the whole of Wednesday – appearing in 7.6% of all Tweets, and beaten only by #rio2016 and #olympics!

Will Team GB’s divers continue to make a splash on Twitter as the solo events unfold?
