Advertisers Give It the Old College Try

Who’s on Top? – August 28 - September 3, 2017

Advertising spend for new ads on national TV grew during the week of August 28th for the third week in a row, reaching $98 million – a nearly 20% increase over the previous week. While NFL preseason games were the top shows for debuting ads last week, college football games took the top spot this week, generating $13.4 million or 13.7% of total spend on new ads on national television during the 7-day period. In addition, pre- and post-college game shows drove another $533,000 in new ad spend for the week.

In the wake of Tropical Storm Harvey, Walmart debuted a timely 30 second spot celebrating the spirit and resilience of the people of Texas. Scenes of neighbors pulling together amongst the devastation are shown as a reassuring voice describes the special nature of Texas, “where we always find a way”. The spot concludes with dual on-screen messages, offering support for the people of Texas (“To the Lone Star State, you are not alone”) and thanks to the American people for helping Walmart raise “over $25 million for Harvey relief”.
