The greats of modern football descend in Paris this evening for the unveiling of the 63rd Ballon d’Or winner.
Away from the red carpet, analysis by Kantar Media has revealed the most followed footballers on the planet – a ranking dominated by the global superstars of the beautiful game.
Kantar Media analysed follower counts across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram & YouTube for each of the 30 shortlisted players for this year’s Ballon d’Or.
The findings include:
- Cristiano Ronaldo tops the ranking with an aggregate of 345m followers across social platforms – more than the combined following of players ranked 10-30, which includes the likes of Mo Salah, Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane.
- Four of the top-ten players represent Real Madrid, the most-followed club in the UEFA Champions League.
- Additional analysis by Kantar Media showed the impact of Ronaldo’s move to Juventus – with a 30% increase in volume of social posts mentioning Juventus since the Portuguese star’s arrival in Turin.
- Neymar is second in the social followers ranking with more than 200m, however when it comes to driving the discussion online – CR7 has four times the volume of mentions in social posts compared to the Brazilian captain.
