During October 11th, or Super Sunday as it was known amongst sports fans throughout Ireland, Irish people tweeted the official hashtags for the Ireland v France rugby match a total of 20,478 times. Football fans generated 4,351 tweets using the official hashtags for the Poland V Ireland game. This was a stark contrast to the column inches provided by traditional print media, where coverage for both matches was more evenly distributed, with a 54%-46% split in favour of the Irish rugby team.

The Sunday World was the biggest generators of coverage for football, while The Sunday Independent was the most active publication for rugby coverage. The Ireland v France rugby game garnered €820,298 worth of press coverage, 4% more than the Poland v Ireland football match, which achieved €786,310.

In an interesting observation, females were much more vocal on rugby than football, accounting for 45% of all tweets throughout the Ireland v France match while only providing 18% of all tweets for the Ireland v Poland game.

Martin O’Neill led the managerial mentions across social media, while Paul O’Connell picked up three times the amount of coverage than his football counterpart for the day, John O’Shea. The unfortunate injury O’Connell suffered at the end of the first half contributed extensively to his coverage.

Rugby again dominated the power rankings for player mentions on twitter, with Paul O’Connell, and Ian Madigan featuring in the top two, while Shane Long, Ireland’s goal scoring hero against Germany on Thursday night, finished in 3rd spot.

The hashtag #IREvFRA amassed a colossal 15,230 tweets throughout Super Sunday, while the #Shouldertoshoulder hashtag, as championed by the IRFU, was tweeted an incredible 4,696 times. The hashtag #POLIRL, as tweeted by the FAI throughout the game, picked up 1,378 tweets.

The common theme for both codes on match day was the hashtag #COYBIG, which was tweeted an amazing 9,756 times.
